Travelling in cars with young kids in China

My partner and I are travelling for 10 days to Shanghai and then HK with our 20 month old and 5 year old. We plan to do some short day trips with some other friends who also have older children.

We weren%26#39;t planning on taking a car seat for the flight from Aust. I can%26#39;t find any information about whether there are any regulations about restraining children (especially the 20 month old) in a child safety seat in China.

I was thinking about getting a saftey harness but they aren%26#39;t approved for use in Australia so it seemed a little pointless but perhaps better than nothing. I%26#39;ve also heard that its difficult to find taxis with seat belts in the rear, so a child seat or harness also seems pointless.

If we were taking day trips, can we hire a car in advance with at least a seat belt or even a car seat?

You will need to book in advance for a driver and a car fitted with the child seats. Try an international company such as Avis. They can offer airport pickup and chauffeur service with the car safety options. But the catch is going to be the price. No taxis will not be ';safe'; and it is going to be a risky. Also try the expat forums for a better insight.
