quick q re: airport to causeway bay hotel

Leaving for HK in a few hours.

We%26#39;ll be staying at the Metropark...

Would it be more convenient to use the A11 bus or the Airport Express?

I searched several forums but I can%26#39;t find where the HK station is if we use the AE. Would we then hop on the MTR or use a cab to get to the hotel? (I assume the station is not near/walking distance --with luggage in tow-- to the hotel)

quick q re: airport to causeway bay hotel

If you have a lot of luggages, then it will be easier to use the AE and then take a taxi to Metropark from HK station.

The A11 bus stop is about few hundred yards from the hotel if you take the bus from the airport.

quick q re: airport to causeway bay hotel

HK station is connected to Central, though it is still a bit of a walk.

I have taken the A11 from outside the Metropark to the airport and found it very convenient indeed so I%26#39;d advise this route. It costs $44 (I think) and can be paid for with an Octopus card, which I recommend you get at the airport.

Forgot to add, if you do decide to take the AE and then the MTR, the nearest station to the Metropark is actually Tin Hau, not Causeway Bay.

Thanks for your helpful and quick replies. The A11 sounds like a good option as oppose to having to change transport. We are traveling lightly so it should not pose a problem.

3 Day Visit to HK - Macau?

My wife and I are visiiting for 3 days in early March - we want to see as much of HK as possible and already have some ideas of what we want to do. Is Macau worth spending a day visiting during one of our days?

3 Day Visit to HK - Macau?

It depends on what would you like to see. The outlook of Hong Kong and Macau is similar, although Macau is smaller and less modern than Hong Kong.

You may know that since last two years, Macau opened many new casino. Today, it looks similar to Las Vegas. On the contrast, casino is prohibted in Hong Kong.

Except the casino, the feeling of Macau is more relax and you can really feel the mix of West (Portugese) and East.

People said Hong Kong is the mix of West and East but I feel Macau is more representable. Hong Kong is just internationized.

Anyway, go to Macau is just 1 hour by ferry and it costs HKD 300/p (return). If you find 2 days are enough for you in Hong Kong, you may spend one day in Macau. May be you have good luck in casino!

Have a nice trip!

3 Day Visit to HK - Macau?

Thank you for the information. Are prices of goods in macau cheaper than HK?

I think there%26#39;re less shopping areas in Macau than in HK. We usually go to Macau for nice food (pretty cheap also), some sightseeing and the casinos. If you prefer shopping, HK will be a better place to stay in.

Not being into Casinos - is the sightseeing worth the visit?

For the daily life, Macau is cheaper but as a tourist, going to the restaurant and shopping around, they are similar.

Sorry, forgot to tell you. The old town of Macao has been recently chosen as UNESCO world heritage. There are many old Portugese and Chinese buildings with more than 400 years history.

Hi MartinB,

I%26#39;m from London and just came back from a week in Hong Kong, we spent one day in Macau and I regret not spending more time there really. My last holiday was in Portugal and it really reminded of the country!

I felt it was a strike contrast to Hong Kong and that we visited, literally another country!

The buildings/historical sites are lovely and I enjoyed walking up and down the cobbled streets,

Looking at the pretty squares and it reminded me of Italy too in parts.

I think there is too much to do in Hong Kong also for only 3 days, so upto you really whether you want the shopping malls and galmour of HK or the somewhat tranquil streets of Macau or a mix of both.

Sam

Thanks for all the information.

Sam - what did you do in HK - what are the must do and sees?

Hi Martin

Someone has posted a top ten things to do in HK, look at that, but the Ngong Ping 360 cable car ride, Stanley Market (go to Bayside Brasserie, superb food there!), Harbour lightshow and Lantau visit to Buddha statue are must do%26#39;s in my book. Macau - you can get around easily on buses, just ask at the tourist info centre when you arrive, I got hassled by taxi drivers saying they are tour reps here, don%26#39;t trust them and go on your own, is very small place.

Enjoy!

Sam

    Buy one here instead? :)

Any of those will do. You need a tri- or quad- band only if you intend to use it in North America or a few South American countries. Phones bought in China rarely carry any international warranty.

best way travelling to Harbin - from Beijing!

As mentioned whats the best and cheapest way to get here?

Undoubtedly, by train. But when do you want to take this trip? BTW, you can check the train timetable through www.adventurechinatrip.com/chinatrain.asp.

best way travelling to Harbin - from Beijing!

intend to visit Harbin by May

During May is there still skiing?

isnt the train ride really long

It%26#39;s only about 10h40min to get there on the fastest train (the Z train), which are overnight anyway, so you don%26#39;t actually lose any time travelling. You have to sleep somewhere anyway, so why not in a comfortable train sleeper?

Train speeds are due to upgrade again in April this year, so it might be even faster by the time you travel.

The Z15 leaves Beijing at 2030 and arrives in Harbin at 0710 the next morning. Hard sleeper costs 263/272/281 for upper/middle/lower bunk and soft sleeper costs 411/429 RMB for upper/lower bunk.

    Prices quoted are for one-way.

You might be able to buy it from Beijing, not sure of the actual possibility as it%26#39;s currently Spring Festival transport season, so rules might be different from normal times.

Delight in a breathtaking performance of the renowned Shanghai Acrobats. Chinese dinner will be included in tonight%26#39;s activities. ($25, dinner included.)

are any of these trips a good value? thanks

    opinions on optional tours

Most of this you can easily do on your own for a little less money, but if you prefer to have things organized I suppose these would be fine.

The Shanghai Acrobats seems reasonable enough.

The experience of having the duck banquet (along with the Peking Opera performance) might be better than going on your own, since much Chinese food is really meant to be shared at a large table. The value will depend on the quality of the meal.

The Suzhou excursion would be worthwhile since that would be more trouble to do on your own (though there are better places to go than Suzhou).

The Great Wall at Badaling is not the best part of the wall to visit. The Ming tombs aren%26#39;t that great. You could hire your own car for about the same price.

Most of the other things would be easy to do on your own.

    opinions on optional tours

The lunch at the Summer Palace is banquet style and it was terrible. I do not recommend that food at all - even if it is IMPERIAL cuisine. Ask for the tour without the lunch and go somewhere else or take a snack with you. Plan to have a decent dinner somewhere else instead.

Go to the Mutianyu section of the wall instead of Badaling, if you want a more peaceful experience.

Personally you don%26#39;t need to do all of these tours in an organised fashion

T square and the forbidden city you can do on your own. Just get to T square and the Forbidden city is opposite. Get a taxi home. There is English signage in the Forbidden city plus an audio guide in English, if you wish.

You can definitley go the the Temple of Heaven on your own by taxi.

Try to avoid too many of these lunches. They will all be virually the same sort of food.

Side trips - yes indeed book a tour

Around the city - go by taxi and return to your hotel by taxi, choose your own food independently.

  • Need Good Advice - Li River Cruise

    Hi Everybody,

Most likely I have a chance to visit Guilin in April. The main reason I want to go there is Guilin has most beautiful scenery when we take Li river cruise.

Things which need your good advice and recs are as follows:

-where and what hotel I should take so it will be easy for me to start cruise?

-how long does it take to finish the cruise?

-does the cruise have only one route or does it have several ones?

-if it has more than one route, then which route has the most beautiful scenery?

-what is the best way to have a cruise with more privacy because from some reviews it is like parade boats and crowded as well.

-how to get a cruise with an old-fashioned boat rowed by an old man with traditional hat as shown on many photos of Guilin.

For me it is not necessary to take long cruise with many people and to see many things. The thing I want the most is just sitting on an old boat sailing with slow speed, get relax, seeing and feeling the beauty surrounds me.

I believe your advices will make my wish comes true.

    Thank you.

    Regards,

    Picar

Need Good Advice - Li River Cruise

It sounds like you should be considering the smaller and shorter cruise between Yangshuo and Xingping (IIRC) instead of the Li River cruise.

You have my email, let me know if you want some candid photos taken when I was in Yangshuo in September last year. Also take a good look at http://www.yangers.com if you haven%26#39;t done so already.

    To Ellyse,

Thank you for your info. Can you let me have more advices about shorter cruise.

    Thank you again.

As I said, please take a look at the website I provided above. Alf the webmaster is the person to ask if you%26#39;ve any specific queries.

I%26#39;ve received your email and replied with the photos. I%26#39;m sorry I don%26#39;t have more, but I didn%26#39;t have a digicam when I visited, those photos are from my travel companion.

Wow, Ellyse! Thank you, thank you. This cruise sounds fantastic!

    Susan

No problem, glad to be of help. :)

hello, if you want to do li river cruise, you should stay in Guilin, not in Yangshuo, as only in Guilin city you can cruise Li river from Zhujiang dock of Guilin to Yangshuo, guide will meet you at 8 in your hotel and will pick u up to the dock at about 9 am, the boat leave for yangshuo at about 9: 30, the best landscape section is from Guilin to Yangshuo. so it is must-visit, although many tourists say it is too commercial. I am local of this area. it is hard to get a private boat as most tourits take big boat, it is hard to look for a boat with old man with traditional hat as shown on many photos, you should contact local for the small boat.

    Money in Beijing Capital Airport

Require some advice regarding changing US and Aust $ for Chinese RMB at Beijing Airport

    Regards Bob

    Money in Beijing Capital Airport

No problem for either. What are you trying to ask exactly?

    Money in Beijing Capital Airport

I guess exchanging AUD and USD are equally problem free, hence no reason for Rob to get USD at home first and bring USD to China.

there are some banks at the airport,if you exchange not more than 500$,will charge 30RMB for service fee there except Bank of Agriculture.

  • qs for the experts>> Macau tour & Chinese junk ride

we (dad, my bro%26amp; i) are going to HK for a few days and were planning to make a side trip to Macau.

i know there are a lot of tour operators to choose from...but i was wondering if any of you have had the chance to go on such a tour.

i want to know, based on experience, which tour operators would you recommend especially for the Macau trip? we are touring HK (kowloon, HK island, peak, lantau) pretty much on our own but to Macau, we want to go with a group.

    is that a good idea?

we figured, we%26#39;d be devoting just 1 day to Macau and being with a group would probably be the best way to cover as many scenic spots as possible in a short amount of time.

so any tour operators you%26#39;d recommend? or are they all equally good? any operators i should avoid?

preferably, one that would take you to the best places and would provide decent transportation and would have a guide with okay English skills.

also, do these operators normally secure the visa for you?

lastly, is the free chinese junk ride (courtesy of the tourism board) worth trying?

the concept of going on an authentic boat seems interesting although i would like to know how others who%26#39;ve tried it, felt about the experience... some say it%26#39;s a rough ride. i don%26#39;t have motion sickness so that%26#39;s not much of a problem but i wonder if it%26#39;s safe? also, all i%26#39;m really after some good photo ops on the boat. haha.

we%26#39;re also staying at the ymca salisbury, which means we%26#39;ll be having a good view of the harbor. although, i%26#39;d be curious to know whether it%26#39;s a different experience seeing it while sailing the harbor itself.

so there, sorry for the long post..

and thanks in advance, all of your answers will be greatly appreciated...cheers!

qs for the experts%26gt;%26gt; Macau tour %26amp; Chinese junk ride

    Hi

A day in Macau is ample to see most things, just catch a ferry from HK. We took a guided tour with a guy that aproached us at the ferry terminal they had a little office just to the left of the main entrance/exit of the ferry terminal in Macau. For 5 people we paid HK$600? for a 3 hour guided tour round the island in a van with about 6 stops (a temple, a ruined church etc) the guide was good and he dropped us of in the main shopping area.

(Please note this was in April 2005)

Generaly VISA%26#39;s are not required for Macau or HK unless you are staying for more than 90 days, please check on this as it may be different rules apply to your country.

    Cheers

qs for the experts%26gt;%26gt; Macau tour %26amp; Chinese junk ride

    GG:

We rode on the Duk Ling on February 8th and I highly recommend it. For harbour photos check out my blog at www.americansabroad.blogspot.com and follow the links. We stayed at the Salisbury YMCA from 3-9 February and thoroughly enjoyed it. Try the international buffet.

I haven%26#39;t visited Macau since 1992 but when we did we took the high speed ferry from Central (right next to the new Star Ferry pier) and hired a car and driver for the day. Macau is very small and you can visit all the major sights in one day.

    crusaders and spinkk!

    thanks for the info!

spinkk, lovely photos, i knew they would make for great photo ops! did you have something to eat on the boat? haha, just curious. seems like there were only a few of you on it.

did u register in advance? probably not since it doesn%26#39;t seem like there were any queues for that. how long did that ride last? i was hoping it would last at least an hour into the night if we rode at around 5pm. what time did you ride the boat?

hope we get a chance to ride it even if i%26#39;ve read somewhere it may be up for maintenance around March. hmm, let%26#39;s hope we can still catch it.

    crusaders,

for the van, that probably wasn%26#39;t a legitimate operator? are there a lot of those vans around...especially the ones which do not require a prior reservation? and was the HK$600 flat rate for each van or was it because of the size of your party? hmm, i%26#39;m thinking we could split a van with a couple if that were the case, since there%26#39;s only three of us anyway.

    thanks again!

    Hi

They had a office inside the ferry terminal so I presume they are legit. We haggled over the cost I think they started at HK$150 per person and we settled on HK$600 as a flat rate, The van had no sign writing on it from memory and we had the van just for our group (it seated about 8 people)

    Transportation between cities

My husband and I are planning a trip to China in late August for 15 days. We are arriving in Shanghai and planning on visiting the following cities in the following order.........Shanghai, Hangzhou, Hong Kong, Canton, Guilin, Xian, Beijing, and then fly back home from Shanghai. I need help with transportation between the cities. Is train the best way to go or should we fly betweeen some of these cities?

    Transportation between cities

I think you need to choose a mix of train/air way for travelling between cities. Check the domestic flight info through www.elong.com and train schedule through www.adventurechinatrip.com/chinatrain.asp.

    Good luck

    Transportation between cities

First off, there%26#39;s no direct train from Hangzhou to Hong Kong, and flying would be a lot more expensive. The most hassle-free method would be to go directly upon arrival at Shanghai Pudong airport to Hangzhou by direct airport shuttle, sightsee there and then come back to Shanghai to take the direct international train to Hong Kong. Note that this train only departs every other day from Shanghai though (scroll down http://www.it3.kcrc.com/B2C/UserPage/sysTimeTable_Eng.asp).

Alternatively, you could go to Hong Kong directly from Shanghai upon flying into Shanghai, and visit Hangzhou at the end of your trip instead.

Or, if you haven%26#39;t bought your plane tickets yet, it would make much more sense if you could fly open-jaw into Hong Kong and out of Shanghai, or vice versa.

The name Canton has not been in use for many years already, the present name is Guangzhou.

I would recommend going to Yangshuo (http://www.yangers.com) unless you don%26#39;t mind staying in overpriced accommodation in yet another Chinese city.

    Option 1: Shanghai Pudong airport -- direct airport shuttle -- Hangzhou (1 day) -- 2-hour train -- Shanghai -- train (1 day) -- Hong Kong (2.5 days) -- 1-2 hour train/bus -- Guangzhou (1 day) -- 10-hour bus -- Yangshuo (2.5 days) -- bus -- Guilin -- flight -- Xi%26#39;an (1.5 days) -- overnight train -- Beijing (3 days) -- overnight train -- Shanghai (1.5 days)

    Option 2: Shanghai (1 day) -- train (1 day) -- Hong Kong (2 days) -- 1-2 hour train/bus -- Guangzhou (1 day) -- 10-hour bus -- Yangshuo (2.5 days) -- bus -- Guilin -- flight -- Xi%26#39;an (1.5 days) -- overnight train -- Beijing (3 days) -- overnight train -- Hangzhou (1 days) -- 2-hour train -- Shanghai (1.5 days)

    Option 3: Hong Kong (2 days) -- 1-2 hour train/bus -- Guangzhou (1 day) -- 10-hour bus -- Yangshuo (2.5 days) -- bus -- Guilin -- flight -- Xi%26#39;an (1.5 days) -- overnight train -- Beijing (3 days) -- overnight train -- Hangzhou (1 days) -- 2-hour train -- Shanghai (1.5 days)

Personally I think the last option would be the best as you don%26#39;t need to backtrack. Of course it could also work in the opposite direction!

Email me at ellyse99@yahoo.com if you%26#39;d like to discuss itinerary and scheduling, I%26#39;m studying in Shanghai and have travelled extensively in mainland China. Please put ';TripAdvisor Anna1201'; in the subject line so that I don%26#39;t junk your email by mistake, thanks. :)

That train from Shanghai to Hong Kong goes through and stops in Hangzhou. You could also fly to Shenzhen from Hangzhou for 75USD or less for a one way ticket. Getting to Hong Kong from Shenzhen is an easy bus ride.

As far as I know, the Shanghai -- Hong Kong only stops at Jinhua West, Zhuzhou and Guangdong East before arriving in Hong Kong. No Hangzhou.

  • has anyone been to Wuzhen?

Have been told it is good, but cannot find it in any of the guide books. Or maybe I am spelling it wrong???

It is roughly between Suzhou and Hangzhou.

Would like to know if it is worth visiting. Will be there mid April

    has anyone been to Wuzhen?

I%26#39;ve been to Wuzhen and most of the other water villages around Shanghai. Wuzhen is in Zhejiang province, have a look at http://www.wuzhen.com.cn for more information if you%26#39;re interested.

Personally I would say Wuzhen pales in comparison to Xitang; my other favourites apart from Xitang would be Tongli and Luzhi in Jiangsu province.

    has anyone been to Wuzhen?

Yes I have been to Wuzhen and found the place fascinating. Unbelievably, some people (aged) still live in the village. A kind of living museum - although the guide explained they do have some help with expenses as a result of putting up with people looking through windows at them.

It is a lovely place with dark wood panelled houses and picturesque scenery. I enjoyed the place and even the food was good there. We tried some local confectionary which was very strange to look at but i tasted good.

The website abovementioned is a great place to learn about the village.

When you arrive at the place there is just a huge carpark - so you don%26#39;t really know what to expect from outside. Thankfuly the place was quiet the day we went there. It takes a fair time getting out there. About two hours.

The interesting thing about the trip out is the number of new housing estates - ALL empty!! Construction for what purpose?

It is worth vsiting.Look up the website above for the map which shows that it is close to Hangzhou.

thank you both - think we will give it a try. Its website - albeit VERY slow - is great. Loads of atmosphere.

    Marco Polo Gateway Hotel

HAs anyone stayed at the marco polo gateway hotel lately as after reading a few reviews I am a bit worried as we have booked for a week in September and am a bit concerned as some of the reviews are saying that it is very dated and not very nice and we are taking my brother and at 43 this is his first time overseas so I want it to be a memorable experience for him. Can anyone give me a more up to date idea?? What about places for breakfast??

    Thanks in advance

    Marco Polo Gateway Hotel

No worries, Marco Polo Gateway is a good and decent hotel. Not only the quality but alos it is located in downtown (Tsim sha Tsui) which is convenient for you to go any place you like.

I browse my tour agency%26#39;s itinery and find that there%26#39;s no Hot Spa, no Pearl Farm Visit and no Wuzhishan Mountain Visit and an island visit around Yalong/Sanya area. and the hotels they offer are 3* only but all meals given. Wish me a pleasant trip, OK? With Tigerairways, I suppose I will stopover Hainan Island anytime and hop over Guangzhou, Hongkong/Shenzhen and Macau. Hope more travel agencies offer much better itineries with all these places included.

    Hi, MdmChng

We didn%26#39;t follow any tour agency. I book the airtickets from Tigers and I think my inlaw relative will come and pick us up. I also book the Weika hotel becos my in laws relative stay very near the hotel area - Wenchang.

I hope everythings will be fine for me because I need to bring my two kids (6 %26amp; 2 years) and ';touch wood'; - give me a smooth journey.

Tell me more when you return. This is my first time visit my husband parents hometown.

    Regards

    Lynn Seah

Hi, all, just came back from Hainan not long ago. Trip was wonderful. Visited my relatives in Wenchang on the Free Day of our tour trip with an agency here. One day free day was very rushed but luckily was very well organised by our Hainan relatives. Their Wenchang Chicken was terrific. Their crabs were fresh from the sea. The meal they prepared for us was really terrific Chinese homestyle cooking. Waika Hotel is very well known in Wenchang

The standard room was only RMB 260 when we were there. Just across the road is a Metropole Hotel where the room rate I saw was RMB 138. If I were not not so fussy next time and only need clean bed and bath, I wouldn%26#39;t mind this hotel next time. And we had a table for ten in this Metrolepole Hotel for ony RMB 150! For 1st timers, it is better to follow a packaged tour preferably a 7 day type.

They have many side tours to the jade, pearl, crystal making , shark liver oil, coconut candy ,coffee/tea fty, chinese medicinal products factories. Just don%26#39;t be tempted to overspend. At Mt Dongshanlin, don%26#39;t ';pick up stick'; and ask the monks there of your destiny, they request you to buy a pair of Giant Joss sticks for RMB 160 per person(That%26#39;s RMB 320 per couple). Luckily we had no more money left. The scenery from the mountain tops here and at the Luhuitou peak was memorable. Sanya beach was very tempting for skin diving which we didn%26#39;t have time to try. On the whole, I will go back to Hainan again but not on tour group anymore. The room rates and Chinese seafood meals are terribly cheap

    Hi Folks !

We are a two grandparents from Devon, England, visiting our daughter, son-in-law, and baby boy of one year, who are in Xian. The five of us are interested in flying to from Xian to Hainan, and staying for a week or ten days, in March.

We would like a small guesthouse, somewhere by a beach, preferably quiet, and importantly, not very expensive.

Does such a place exist ?

Would mosquitos be a problem ?

    Thankyou for any advice !

    JackieofDevon:

On Hainan there are no guesthouses like you wish, only hotels. If you are living in Britain, I dont think you will feel comfortable at Hainan, esp. not at the beaches-areas. There is no interesting there if you are used to travel. At night-time, you better stay in the hotels, no bars, no restaurants, no people outside. No shops, no amusement.

The beaches are ok, nothing more. You have to rely on taxis if you have to move from one place to another in evenings and nights. The taxidrivers dont speak anything but Mandarin.

Some foreigners complain about these things. Frankly spoken, Hainan is meant for Chinese ( and some Russians).

    One good thing: The climate.

Price-level: In Sanya city (30-40 min with taxi) its low. At the luxury-hotels at the beaches: 3-4 times higher than in Britain.

  • Hong Kong Airport

    Hey all

I%26#39;m trying to get some general info on the Hong Kong airport together... things like average meal costs at the different eateries, cost of a cup of coffee etc... Also does anybody have any places in there they would recommend eating at before others? Or maybe the best internet area to visit?

Heh... and no, I%26#39;m not planning on living there... too long! :P

    Hong Kong Airport

I didn%26#39;t exactly bother with eating, but the fast food areas near the gates are very busy and popular, as are similar places in the main terminal. In fact, one of the very nice things about the terminal is the near-party atmosphere at food areas. So go slurp some noodles.

My impression of the airport is that its designers were extraordinarily considerate of passenger comfort and pleasure.

    Hong Kong Airport

Thanks for the help. Anyone know the average big Mac meal cost in HKIA? Or is the local food cheaper? :P

Chain restaurants and chain shops have more or less same prices at the airport as in town(a lease agreement condition).

Thanks for that... I suppose that makes sense, should have thought about that! Well, does anyone have any suggestions on places to eat that THEY enjoyed in HKIA?

After you check in and pass through Immigrations there is some sort of food court on the mezzanine or 2nd floor (need to go up by escalator). There was a place selling chocolate chip cookies which I enjoyed. I also usually eat at the Chinese food counter - sorry I don%26#39;t remember the names, for a final taste of HK Chinese food. It%26#39;s a great way to spend your last reminaing HK$.

    Hello

The airport was designed by Sir Norman Foster - famous English Architect and it%26#39;s the best airport I%26#39;ve ever been to.

The food is reasonable (cheap for such modern, clean surroundings) and there are different types of cuisine..... now you don%26#39;t REALLY want to eat a big mac in Asia do you?????

The Asian cuisine in the airport is lovely. I normally eat at the Japanese Restaurant there on the Mezanine level.

There are a few coffee shops to chill and relax.

I think a Ramen (noodle soup) with chicken cost about £5 sterling and was good value.

    Enjoy

    pearls

Will be visiting Beijing in Februauy, 2007. Where is the best place to but real cultured fresh water pearls in Beijing. I%26#39;m not an expert on pearls, so do you know a reputable dealer? I also will be looking to buy jade jewelry.

    Thanks

    pearls

If you%26#39;re not an expert about pearls and jade, and you%26#39;re looking to buy REAL stuff, my advice would be not to -- especially for jade. How would you really know if you%26#39;re getting what you%26#39;re paying for?

Well, if you still want to try, you might head to Hongqiao market.

    pearls

I agree, I never try to buy anything of any value that is %26#39;real%26#39; or %26#39;authentic%26#39; in China unless I am sure I know how to tell if it is real or fake.

You can get cheap strands of freshwater pearls at Hongqiao market. As far as I know, they are real pearls, but they are low-quality. You are not going to get a necklace worth hundreds of dollars for just a dollar or two. You might pay fifty or sixty dollars for one worth just a dollar or two, though.

So don%26#39;t go to Hongqiao to buy fine jewelry, but just something you like that you can wear or give as a low-cost gift that someone might enjoy.

I assume most %26#39;jade%26#39; for sale is not jade at all (I%26#39;ve even seen people trying to pass off plastic as jade!)

    Hi there,

I agree it is difficult to know the good from the bad, but the bad ALWAYS looks bad.

I have been buying pearls (both fresh water which are not perfectly round but can have great luster) and salt water pearls and have had them appraised in Ct for good prices for the past 10 years.

On the 5th floor of the Pearl Market is a woman named Jane at Jane%26#39;s shop.

I am just passing this on. I have no affilation with her other than the fact that I feel secure she will not give me dyed black fresh water pearls and say they are tahitians or that potato body pearls will be passed off as Mikimotos. She is fair, but as was indicated before,

buy only if you like the pearls.

There is a website...pearlguide.com that has experts that help you understand how pearls are made and sold.

You may want to check it out to educate yourself before you leave.

other wise it is like ';casting pearls before swine';....meaning unless we know SOMETHING about the item we purchase, there is no incentive to show any really good items that can be affordable.

Good luck and have a blast!

for jade, maybe you should go to jade carving factory visit it.go to Hongqiao pearl market for purchase, good price there.

Please understand that I never buy Jade as It appears to me that the stones are either carnelian or adventurine and they cost a lot.

For little gifts, I have bought ';chops'; which are stone with your name in chinese inscribed at the end.

Some are intricately carved, not jade, but look like what people are selling for jade and they can be large or small.

People loved that they can show a nicely carved gift from China.

I have never found ANY nice jade at the Pearl Market.

  • Where to eat in Qingdao?

    Staying at the Crowne Plaza.

Looking for good local eats...seafood, dumplings, etc. Not interested in fine dining...just want to get a taste of the local flavor. Both street food and sit down.

    Thanks a lot!

I hope that this reaches you in time! I%26#39;ve stayed at the Crowne Plaza many times- nice place. Our favorite place to eat is Monnemer Eck German Restaurant and Bar. You can walk to it from the hotel. I%26#39;d tell the doorman that you want to go there and he can write a card for you.

    living expenses

Hello I am looking at a job offer in shenzhen and i wonder if someone can share some info in living expenses.

    housing, groceries, transport.

I will be working at the airport so I wonder which area is good to look for a place to live.

    Thanks

    living expenses

Taxis are cheap (flag fall is Rmb12.5), food is cheap (not a lot of Western food, but you can head to Hong Kong for that), groceries are cheap, and housing is pretty cheap too. Not sure about airport areas, but it%26#39;s fairly close to Shekou, an area where lots of foreigners live (there%26#39;s more Western restaurants and bars out there). Shekou is about a 40 minute cab ride to central Shenzhen, and it%26#39;s probably only about 15 minutes to the airport (I%26#39;m guessing there, but it%26#39;s an educated guess). Shekou is a bit pricier than central SZ (catering to all the foreigners, I guess), but it%26#39;s still a lot cheaper than Hong Kong.

Compared to the UK (which I assume is where you are now) Shenzhen is practically FREE! Hong Kong is more pricey, more like New York City prices. Check out these websites for more info on Shenzhen:

Thanks for your info I will have a look a the web sites.

    Cheeers

Hello again I wonder if you could also help me to figure out, how much you pay for utilities. Like hydro, gas, A/C. etc.

    What about taxes??

    I appreciate your help.

    Wador

Taxes are a tricky one, especially with the changing regulations. The government has just required that all foreigners file tax returns by April 2007. See this site: http://www.szds.gov.cn/en/filing3.asp#03

For detailed tax advice, you should probably talk to a professional. I understand that income taxes are pretty high here (someone recently told me 45% - not sure how accurate that is).

I don%26#39;t know if the tax rate varies depending on income. I do know that they have recently raised the tax-free threshold for foreigners to about 4000 and some employers file dummy returns so very few English teachers pay any income tax at all. Over that 4000 the tax rate I pay is about 15%. I looked at some real estate windows in Shekou last Sunday and the rentals there were double what I pay in Zhuhai for similar sized apartments - around 4000-5000 for 2 bdr %26amp; about 80sqm. However Shekou would be a great place to live if you have a foreign income and want to live a western life-style - lots of bars, outdoor cafes %26amp; wetsern restaurants, plus English menus in the Chinese restaurants.

In a Chinese restaurant you can expect to pay about 30 RMB person for a meal (50 if it is a very upmarket place and you drink lots of beer). On the street expect to pay 2-5 RMB for breakfast snacks.

I can%26#39;t help you with groceries as I don%26#39;t know how ';western'; you want to live. I know I pay in RMB what I used to pay in $$ but I eat Chinese most of the time.

Thanks very much for the info I appreciate the input

I will probably have to go there for an interview before I actually move so that will give me a chance to see.

    Beijing Tours

Anyone heard of or have an opinion on the Beijing Xinhua tour company... I am trying to negotiate a private tour with them for my family (2 adults, 1 teenage girl and a 9 year old girl).

    Beijing Tours

Is this tour company based in Beijing? If whatever problem comes up, will their manager be available only during THEIR office hours (which is 13 hrs different)? If there is a dispute, are you going to sue them in China?

There are many tour companies in the US that does customized private tours.

    Beijing Tours

    Thanks bibimbob

They are Beijing based and list their 24 Hour Hotline number and 24 Hour Mobile number. They do list their License number, and are on the list of the Chinese National Tourism Authority, for whatever that is worth. Through the email they have been very flexible.. for example I requested no shopping stops, and they agreed, and I asked about what would happen if I don%26#39;t like the guide/driver... they can be changed. I also was impressed in that I asked them to book tickets for the puppet theater. They tried but said that when they contacted the theater they were told that the March shows were not planned yet, so the agent replied and suggested that I book myself when I get there because he couldn%26#39;t guarantee the quality. I also asked for a specific theater for the Acrobatic show (Wansheng), and they suggested another, but I insistent on my choice, and they agreed (not that I would be able to tell the difference!)

  • China with Diabetes

Our family will be traveling to China this summer. Son has Diabetes, and to manage that we need to have carbohydrate info on his food choices. What types of food will we find? We will be visiting Beijing, Shahghai, X%26#39;ian, Chengdu, Guilin. Has anyone ever seen a carb counter for food in China?

    China with Diabetes

    1. Before the trip, go to your nearest Chinatown and observe %26amp; memorise the portions/serving size of some typical dishes as to the probable carb value.

    2. Carbohydrate is not the only factor affecting diabetes. Glycemic index plays an important part, so is fat. Northern Chinese cuisine, esp those soft dumplings, and vegan (imitation meats) usually has a higher glycemic index, so beware.

    3. The surest way to manage diabetes on a trip is to check blood sugar level, and fine tune along the way. I am sure you know that travellers%26#39; diarrhoea or just loose stool may upset an anti-diabetic diet regimen.

    4. When you say %26#39;son%26#39;, do you imply a %26#39;type 1%26#39; situation where insulin is needed and always at hand? If so, blood glucose testing is all the more important.

    China with Diabetes

You can find carbohydrate info of some package food, but that may be written in chinese, rather than english. Besides, you can not find the info when you go to restaurant. Perhaps you can choose some chinese dishes made by vegetable, beef, chicken, or fruit. But please bear in mind, some chinese food would be sugary.

    Cheers

    Shopping & Tour Gide

    Hello,

I will be travelling to Shanghi with my husband and three children (aged 10 years %26amp; 8 years) at the end of May. Would someone please answer the following questions; What will the weather be like?, Is it possible to hire a tour guide and what will it cost? Where is the best place to shop for children%26#39;s games and designer fakes e.g. Prada etc. Many thanks.

    Shopping %26amp; Tour Gide

please let me know if you travel xi%26#39;an.

    regards

    Jeff

    Shopping %26amp; Tour Gide

    1) Take a look at http://www.wunderground.com for a better idea of what weather has been like in the past in Shanghai for that time of year. I think temperature would be in the 20s (Celsius) and starting to get a bit muggy.

    2) Of course.

As mentioned, the best market for fakes has closed, but there are still some people in that area selling fakes. Stock up on the fake DVD%26#39;s!!

If you hire a tour guide, you can see the real shanghai in a short time.

If you hire a shopping assistant, you can buy the produces with a lowest price.

Don%26#39;t go to tour guide agency, because the rate sometimes is too high. (some is 120USD) one day.

There are a lot of personal tour guide in Shanghai, you can search on internet.

    price will be 400-700RMB/day

    CuteMinMin

Where/how should we look on the web for a tour guide please?

Also how much is 400-700 RMB approx in US$ %26amp;/or £ GBP?

Also if you wanted to stay near the Westin /the Bund but wanted a slightly cheaper 4* hotel, which would you choose?

Thank you very much for your help.

Safety of Free In-town Check-in Service???

    Hi

I am wondering how safe it is to check in the luggage in town?? It sounds super convenient but will my checked in luggage arrive at the airport on time and onto the correct plane??? Will it have a higher chance of getting %26#39;lost%26#39;??

Can anyone who had tried the service before do a quick review?

    Thanks!!!

Safety of Free In-town Check-in Service???

Myself and friends have used this service many times and it is always been 100% efficient and reliable. You really don%26#39;t have anything to worry about, just check in and you%26#39;ll be given your boarding card then relax and enjoy the rest of the day but make sure you get to the airport at least an hour before departure. HK airport operates with impressive efficiency. You should be through immigration and security in 15 mins at the most but gates usually close 30 mins before departure.

Safety of Free In-town Check-in Service???

I have done this many times and never had a problem. To use this service, you have to check-in at least 90 minutes before your flight.

i agree with the above posters, and we had a slightly different situation. on arrival at in-town checkin we were told our flight to paris was overbooked and we were going to be standby on one flgiht and confirmed on another etc...this was at 9am and the flight wasn%26#39;t until midnight. we were still able to leave our bags and enjoy our day (albeit a bit stressed out) but when we went to the airport that night they assured us our bags were in the process of being transferred from the city to the airport and our bags would get on the different flgiht we were going on...got to paris sure enough, no problem...i was impressed.

    j.

    Hi,

I have used this service for so many times too. Never had any problem at all. HK is a very wonderful city and you don%26#39;t have to worry about this and that and the small things that bother you like what happened in some cities. Oh, can%26#39;t wait to go back there.

    CB

Yes, used this service a zillion times, NEVER got lost. However, when I checked in the luggage myself AT THE airport, yes, they lost my luggage once. So, in my records, in town check in was even better!

Super convenient, and super efficient.... yes.... one of the beautiful things about HK!

    Hey,

Thanks for all the replies! I think I%26#39;ll definitely try it this June!

    Thanks again!

    First time visitor

I%26#39;d really appreciate some help here - I have been trying to find out what the climate is like in October and have seen so many conflicting temperatures and rainfall. Obviously, I know you can%26#39;t be totally accurate, but I don%26#39;t want to come if it%26#39;s going to rain heavily all the time or to be cold. Some websites and brochures have stated temperatures of 80/85 some as low as 63/65 - that%26#39;s a big difference!

    First time visitor

In October the climate is not rainy, but wet and sometimes it is raining, but not long time. About the temperature, I am not sure, but may be, at least 70/80.

    sanya for birthday next year

hi, i%26#39;m 40 soon %26amp; my wife is treating me to a special holiday any where i want. seen sanya in a brochure %26amp; really fancy it.

what can i expect? whatabout the people , the food, hotels , beaches , really everything. would be going in august so what about the weather?

any help %26amp; advice will be really appreciated, thanks.

    sanya for birthday next year

Most Westerners are somewhat disappointed by Hainan island, if you%26#39;re used to the likes of other beaches in the world eg Thailand, you might be a prime candidate for disappointment. August would be a very crowded time, I believe.

    sanya for birthday next year

Welcome! It is nice plce for birthday! Good choice! If you need guide, advisor or translator, you can connect with me. May be, comparing with Thailand the beaches are not better, but the air is cleaner here and the culture is higher.

I would like to visit yalong bay in summer 07, however I have 2 children (7 and 8 year olds). Is there plenty of places to walk around things to keep then entertained during the days/evenings.

    Family Holiday

Strongly recommend ';Shell Exhibition Hall'; and ';Butterfly Valley';. Your kids should like them.

    Family Holiday

there are many things to see, ethnic village, monkey island, nanshan temple etc. sanya bay is good also

GBlack : Not many things for children in Yalong Bay. Saw many families there with very bored children. There can be something to experience, but it is done in 1 day. There are NO restaurants outside the hotels. That you must have in your mind.

When the children ask for water, Coke or something to eat, you have only once choice: But it at the hotel to expensive prices and bring it with you. Quite different from other places in the world.

All tourists complain about these things. Only Chinese return to Hainan for holidays, and the reason is clear: This is the only place with nice climate they can travel without apply for visa. Ps. Chinese dont go sunbathing.

Thailand has 1000 places better than Hainan, and 70 % lower prices, 100 % better service.

    ';GBlack : Not many things for children in Yalong Bay. Saw many families there with very bored children.';

Yes. It is true. There are just 2 or 3 things for children, but the situation in Sanya and Dadonghai is different.

    ';There can be something to experience, but it is done in 1 day. There are NO restaurants outside the hotels. That you must have in your mind.';

    Sure.

    ';When the children ask for water, Coke or something to eat, you have only once choice: But it at the hotel to expensive prices and bring it with you.';

    Right.

    ';Only Chinese return to Hainan for holidays';

Untrue. I met a lot of Russians here and some Westerns, plenty of Koreans and Japanese, who are visiting Hainan more then one time.

    ';, and the reason is clear: This is the only place with nice climate they can travel without apply for visa.';

No. At least they can visit Haikou (Hainan), Baihai (Gaungxi), etc.

    ';Thailand has 1000 places better than Hainan';

Thailand is a COUNTRY, Hainan is AN ISLAND in a China-country. Of course in Thailand the places are more, comparing only with Hainan.

    ';, and 70 % lower prices';

Untrue. If you have guide here, the prices are lower. Everyone knows that China is one of the most cheap countries in the World. And the inflation rate is low.

    ';, 100 % better service.';

May be in some Thai resorts they are better.

    ';there are many things to see, ethnic village, monkey island, nanshan temple etc. sanya bay is good also';

Dear, these places are in Sanya, but not close to Yalonbei.

    shopping in China

Hi all, were going to Sanya in August. What is the shopping like? Do they have markets with loads of fake stuff or is it all good quality shops? Thanks Colin

    shopping in China

Absolutely nothing to buy there. If you find something in Sany city, it is 4 times the price of the same stuff in BJ or Shanghai.

    shopping in China

If you really want to buy somethings in Sanya, try not to go to private stores. Consider those big supermarket or shopping mall. Although it%26#39;s expensive, compare with private stores, quality is guaranteed.

    ';Absolutely nothing to buy there. If you find something in Sany city, it is 4 times the price of the same stuff in BJ or Shanghai.';

Not all. For example the cheese is like what you say - 4 times, may be 5 times. But, the tropical products, vegetables, etc. are much cheaper. Of course it is much better to have a guide, otherwise the Chinese sellers/taxi-drivers, etc. will try to enlarge the prices, because ';All of the foreigners are rich!'; LOL !

booking flights from hong kong - oz

can anyone help me to book a virgin atlantic flight from hong kong to sydney or brisbane? I am in uk and to book this flight here would involve paying a premium.

booking flights from hong kong - oz

Firstly Virgin Atlantic do not fly into Brisbane, only Sydney.

Is it a one way flight that you are after? If so, a one way flight is quite expensive when compared to a return flight on any of the major airlines. Have a look at the Virgin Atlantic website and go to the top right hand corner where you can go to the Hong Kong site rather than the UK site and see what prices you come up with.

    Hi,

I am finalizing our schedule this end of Mar for the HK trip with my friends (8 adults all of us).

One of my friend recommended Caritas Lodge.

Nothing much that I can see about it. Any info on this one.

Is it within a good neighborhood ?

I can only see that it is 15-20 minutes walk (away) from Prince Edward MTR.

Any other hotels you can recommend - I admit cheap one as we intend to spend whole day (and night outside), and just need a place to sleep at night (simple and safe).

    Thanks

    Cheers,

    Ram

    HK Hotel - Caritas Lodge

    Thanks Taipo Babe

No problem with the distance - I believe Taxi is easy.

anything else ? Are the rooms good ?

Caritas Lodge is not bad where is located in Yau Ma Tei, quite near MTR station not Prince Edward MTR, but still convenient. The price is around HK$700-850/ day when you want to stay in end of March.

If you want a just a cheap price accommodation but simple and safe, you can choose to stay in the resort which charges around HK$350-450/ day. You can see below website for your reference

    www.involvementstay.com/Accommodation.htm

The one located in Yau Ma Tei is known as Caritas Bianchi Lodge, a different one.

I personally think this is not a good choice... it%26#39;s at least 15 minute walk to Prince Edward MTR, and it%26#39;s next to one of the busiest and noisiest bridge/road in Kowloon..... very dusty too, and taxis cannot really stop there, I have seen SO many accidents and near accident in front of this building b/c a taxi tried to stop to pick up a passenger.

It%26#39;s a relatively safe area, but not much pedestrians to be seen around there.

    Thanks Katetam

Yeah - that is what I am suspecting, after checking the maps of that boundary street.

  • Where to Stay, Shop & Eat!!!

Hi all, im planning a trip to Shen Zhen (2D/1N). Can you please tell me the following:

    1. Hotel to Stay?

    - near to shopping. Near to train station back to HKG.

    2. Where to Shop?

    Lowu??

    3. Where to eat? Any must try food stuff..

    Thanks alot

Where to Stay, Shop %26amp; Eat!!!

I can%26#39;t offer any serious advice except to say that it is all within a very small area once you get to Lo Wu. If you want to go 4-5 star the Shangri-La has a great location right at the border crossing and across the road from the shopping centre; however if you want to save money and have a good time, I recommend you forget about a hotel %26amp; take a 24 hr package at the Moon Bay Spa resort. (I%26#39;m afraid that nothing on their name card is in English). For 108RMB you get 2 light meals (supper at 11pm %26amp; breakfast from 7:30am); a 2 hr massage with full access to sauna, steam room, jacuzzi etc and overnight accommodation in a ';sleeping capsule';. Everything is spotlessly clean, far better than an Aussie Backpackers but the downside is all the smokers.

Where to Stay, Shop %26amp; Eat!!!

Hi i just came back from Shenzhen last week.I would stay in the Shangri-la just about 5 min walk across to Lowu shopping centre which will blow your mind away.Eat at BBC resturant in there its great the food is very nice.I will post my own topic now with photos on it and maybe a video clip as well

HI, we%26#39;re planning a trip for next month. Shangrila area seems ideal, however then price is kind of high for us since we are staying more nights. I am scouting for hotels near shangrila. Any recommendations? I saw one - Hui Zhan Ge which is supposedly right beside shangrila. Any inputs?

  • Transport in HongKong - MTR & Taxi

    Hi all,

    Apologies for the crazy question.

We will be having a short trip to HK - 4D/3N (Fri - Mon)

I will be buying the group this MTR card :

    Airport Express Tourist Octopus ';3-Day Hong Kong Transport Pass';

Does the 3-days start on the hour you%26#39;ve used it and up to 24 hrs. ? or is it on a per day.

Meaning - if I first use it Fri 3pm, will the 3-day expire 3pm Monday or will it be Sunday 11:59pm.

On the other side, I am looking at the HK map / MTR station. Is it easy to get taxi at each station - for example Prince Edward Station. I don%26#39;t see any taxi stand near so can I just easily get one outside.

And then I read that it would be HKD 5 per luggage - does this mean those that of the size when you have to check-in and not those that can qualify as hand-carry in a plane ?

8 adults (2 taxi per 4 pax). I don%26#39;t think we would have huge bags and they should fit in easily at the back of the taxi.

    Thanks a lot

    Cheers,

    -= Ram =-

Transport in HongKong - MTR %26amp; Taxi

The unlimited MTR travel on ';3-Day Hong Kong Transport Pass'; starts at the use of the first MTR ride (excluding Airport Express) and end after 72 hours. If use Airport Express at Fri 1pm, first use MTR Fri 3pm, the 3-day will expire 3pm Monday.

It is not necessary to get a taxi at taxi stands, you can try hailing one anywhere, if it doesn%26#39;t stop , it is probably because of a clearway restriction at that time, in that case, try going somewhere without a yellow line at the kerbside.

Taxi luggage charge applies if that is placed inside the luggage or its length + width + height exceeding 140 cm.

Yes, 4 adults without huge bags should normally fit in a taxi.

By the way, have you considered the Airport Express group ticket, it is a good bargain, probably better than 3-Day Hong Kong Transport Pass, unless you use MTR very much.

Transport in HongKong - MTR %26amp; Taxi

    Missed an important word:

Taxi luggage charge applies if that is placed inside the luggage **compartment** or its length + width + height exceeding 140 cm.

    Thanks Tin

    This is good info.

Actually, if you are going to take Airport Express, you should get a taxi connection at Kowloon Station rather than changing lines to the Prince Edward Station becuase those MTR urban lines may be quite crowded and not very luugage friendly.

If you want to save costs, the cheapest way is to take airbus A21 (HK$33 per person) to Metropark Hotel Mongkok, and get a taxi connection.

Thanks Tin for being taking time to reply and being helpful.

Actually the reason why I want to get the ';Airport Express Tourist Octopus ';3-Day Hong Kong Transport Pass'; '; is because of the unlimited MTR rides.

I initially am thinking of getting the 2 Airport Express Single Journey and then the othe rone, 1 Airport Express Single Journey.

The key is because we would be going around a lot from Fri - Mon, maximing those 3-days.

But now, it seemed that the Airport bus is increasing option, and might be for both to/from Airport.

HKD 50 / 1 day unlimited ride is too much - I don%26#39;t think it is a good idea.

So, can you suggest which option I should take - would getting an Octopus card ?

How much should I get/load on this one for our 4 days usage ?

Any notes/suggestions on this one - obviously for a first-time tourist.

If you will be spending less than HK$130 on MTR for 72 hours, and will take airbus 21, then you should get usual octopus cards at HK$150 each, which includes $100 credit and $50 deposit. I suggest loading a further HK$50 on each card. Further loadings can be made ar MTR stations or convienence stores. Credit can be used on MTR or other tranports including airbus A21. You can check your MTR costs at mtr.com.hk

    Thanks again Tin

BTW - Happy CNY to you

I have made some checks and here is what I am thinking.

    - I will get a Airport Express Tourist Octopus - 3-Day Hong Kong Transport Pass (1-Airport Express Ride)

Will use it on departure date

    - I will add value to this Tourist Octopus card of HKD 40 (or whatever ) for the cost of the airport shuttle bus

Will take airport bus to hotel on arrival

    What do you think ?

    Your suggestions are most helpful

Loading octopus are in multiples of HK$50. Also, 3-day unlimited travel only applies to MTR, so you need more credits for peak tram, bus and ferry.

Anyone recommend A ride with a guide ?

Well, we have gone ahead and cancelled our prebooked tour of Xian which would have been in a big group and will be opting for a more personal tour.

So we are in Xian for 3 nights (2 days), and therfore would be looking to take an early ride out to the Terracotta Army - any suggestions for a guide who could aid us who has some English language skills and also how much roughly should we be paying ?

Anyone recommend A ride with a guide ?

Xian, an ugly, dirty city surrounded by coal burners, was one of the highlights of our trip to China, thanks to our guide Clarence Guo (clarenceguo@yahoo.com). Clarence%26#39;s english is terrific and he is extremely knowledgeable about the sites. He set up our visit to the Tang Dynasty Show and dumpling dinner, and bought a birthday cake for our 14 year old daughter; took us to see the terra cotta warriors; and, in a rare example of actually visiting some place not on a tour, took the five of us to see the cave dwellers.

The caves are amazing. Set into a clay hillside, the caves have two rooms – a bedroom/kitchen and a storage room. Cooking is done in a clay hut next door and the toilets are down the hill, gathered together. Each family has its own toilet, since the waste is used for their farm plot. The caves have rudimentary electricity and radio. The gate swings open to let their car enter!!

There are caves on two sides of an enormous kiln, which is used to bake bricks made from the clay. Coal is shoveled in from the top, a clay door is put up, and when the bricks are done, the door is broken, and the bricks removed. Bricks are then put on a cart, which is wheeled out to the brick yard by the laborers pulling the cart behind them.

IWe brought chocolates for the children, and small gifts from the hotel for the adults - tooth brushes, toothpaste, etc.

We ate lunch at a little restaurant outside Xian, and had what seemed to be a delicious, authentically Chinese lunch. If you have the time, do not miss this! day with Clarence. It is a rare chance to see a part of China that most tourists never see.

Stay in Kowloon area late October

Anyone reccommend a nice place to stay for 4 or 5 nights in the Tsim Tsa Tshui area for around HK900-1000. Is Stanford Hillview ok?

Stay in Kowloon area late October

You can find lots of hotels with this rate like Empire Hotel, Park Hotel, Standford Hillview, etc. All are 3-4 stars hotel. Stanford Hillview is not bad in fact.

    3) Renaissance Kowloon

    4) Marco Polo Prince

    5) Regal Kowloon

    6) BPinternational

    7) Royal Pacific

    8) Standford Hillview

This would be my order of preference.

    Brief Macau trip Report

Left from HK island in an evening on TurboJet to Macau. Cabin seating 4 of us.

First night at Ritz Macao, which provided a spectaular view of Penha Hill, which overlooks Praia Grande Bay and Macau-Taipa bridge.

Following day, transfer to Grand Waldo--and suffered, not knowing day and night hours-too much gaming and great nightlife.

On one night- we covered Cragzy Paris Show at Rest. Portas do Soil in Hotel Lisboa, then onto Jai Alai Complex (was it 2/3 rd floor) for its Jai Alai Show Palace.

On one early morning, early tee off at Macau Golf and Country Club; 18 holes, Par: 71, yardage: 6511; steep slopes and few tight greens, and still recalling the three tiered bunker at par 8th at right of fairway. Few doglegs too.

Had opportunity to sample Lord Stow%26#39;s egg tart, ate and ';tah pau'; (take away- which at first was not allowed, but we persisted) few pieces of sesame cheese cake, and in this eatery-had three glass of its youghurt drink (burp). Also ate dumplings at Hung Pun Kei in Taipa. And also another eatery called Fong Kei, actually selling local biscuits, which brought me down nostalgia lane, when my parents brought them back for me, when they went over for vacation in Macau.

Our HK friends, gathered few of his friends in Macau, and one of them hosted a dinner at Tung Yee Heen, which is in the premise of Mandarin Oriental. Well, it was splendid, but I was looking at something more local(i.e. Macanese), as Cantonese cuisine, an investment banker friend in HK, had already made plans to host us at Fook Lam Moon in Wanchai.

For Macanese food, I found it at Solmar, which to my delight was the African chicken and also bacalhau (codfish-which is my favourite fish). To my curious wife, we were told that the African chicken is seasoned with piquant sauce consisting of garlic and capsicum, then oven baked, and upon serving, topped with the sauce again. Everyone to Macau, must try this African chicken.

It sure taste different from Nando%26#39;s that we have in KL, the piquant sauce was in no comparison to Nando%26#39;s bottled peri-peri sauce.

Back to HK Island at Shun Tak centre via HeliExpress from Macau%26#39;s maritime terminal at Avenida da Amizade. Had a bit of problem, here with our 2 golf bags and overnight bags and (vanity cases) (there were 4 of us- a friend and his wife from HK, being our host), as permissible baggage was 5kg/ person.Almost had to pay a full fare price for this baggages.

For TA forum users, who have KL in their holiday itinerary, and are in HK or Macau, just to inform that our no frills airline-AirAsia, does the KL-Macau route.

Macau :- Eu estarei para trás ( I will be back)

O ';gaming';, alimento, ';shopping';, avista-nos apreciou-o, though por um tempo curto (words written by our Macau hostess- Gaming, food, shopping, sights- we enjoyed it, though for a short time)

Was it a junket ? I get the same, but have not had the opportunity to visit the casino%26#39;s yet. How much did you win ? I love a gamble to !

    mKiaratravel,

Would like to know what did you think of Grand Waldo Hotel. There is no review on this hotel, and it%26#39;s not even on this site.

I hope to bring my family there for a weekend getaway .

    Thanks for any info.

I am debating which one is better to stay: Wynn, Westin, or Grand Waldo.

Grand Waldo is recommended by my travel agent , she says it%26#39;s suitable for my kids?

GrandWaldo,I wouldnt say is family friendly.

I stayed at the Grand Waldo for 2 nights and used their Grand Waldo Spa. While the lobby and room suggests that it%26#39;s more a place for adults rather than family, there%26#39;s a very decent pool on the ground floor and a kids heaven on 5th floor of the spa building (separate block from the hotel). There%26#39;s playground, arcade and all the things kids would love. Enough to occupy them for 5 hours while you gamble or enjoy yourself in the spa on the other floors (yes, it%26#39;s meant for you to drop your kids and the staff will look after them).

If you compare Grand Waldo to Wynn, I would say Wynn is much grander and expensive. But they feel more posh and luxurious, plus their casino is one of the best in Macau. Grand Waldo is value for money if you take the spa-and-room package, costing just US$72 per person, kids under 12 free.

Just a correction of Portuguese from a Portuguese speaker, ';Eu estarei para tras'; means ';I will be in the back';, as in the back of a room. Much more appropriate to say,'; Eu voltarei'; or I will return. Literal translation don%26#39;t work sometimes.

    Greetings.

My wife will be working at Qinglong Lake in Fangshan district for a week, and I%26#39;ll have time to see the area. As this is our first trip, I will spend a couple days seeing the sites in Beijing.

    I think I%26#39;ve made a mistake.

I%26#39;ve booked the steak house at the intercontinental hotel to watch the light show.

Can you see it from this restaurant or is it only the lobby lounge?

    Cheers

    Happy New Year!

    Intercontinental

You can see it from the steak house as well although the view from the lobby lounge is much better as it has bigger and wider windows. The steaks are very good down at the steak house, but it does cost close to HK$1,000 per head with wine. If you are not necessarily there for the steak, you can just get a drink up at the lounge for 10% of the cost.

    Harbourside restaurant - Intercontinental hotel

can anyone advise if there is any alternatives to seafood offered during the nightly buffet?

    Harbourside restaurant - Intercontinental hotel

what do you mean by alternatives?

Do you mean if there are OTHER foods served other than Seafood?

If so, yes, I would say the percentage would be 70% seafood, including the sushi right? , the pasta, salads, and desserts take up the other 30%.

If you don%26#39;t like seafood, I personally would recommend you try the buffet at Island Shangri-la, Kowloon Shangri-la, or Grand Hyatt..... but reservations must be made WELL in advance.

    Harbourside restaurant - Intercontinental hotel

I agree with Katetam. The buffet is mostly loaded with cold seafood items such as crab legs, oysters, baby lobsters. The hot dishes were quite average and selection limited in my opinion. Go to the other places she mentioned if you want a bit more of the other things.

Anything (shops/restaurants) between the Yalong bay hotels?

Since my husband and I are planning a vacation-trip to Sanya, I was wondering, if there is anything like a ';touristical infrastructure'; between the Yalong bay hotels (shops, restaurants etc.)? Or do people basically stay at their hotels every night? Can%26#39;t find much about it in the internet . I only figured out, that there is supposed to be a shopping mall / a small centre nearby the Crowne plaza hotel.

Are there any other hotels in walking distance to that place?

We are looking for a nice hotel (5*) where you also have the possibility to have dinner outside the hotel and do some shopping?

    Any recommendations?

Thanks for your answers in advance.

Anything (shops/restaurants) between the Yalong bay hotels?

    Dear Larissa,

We just got back from Yalong Bay a couple of days ago. The Bay is very nice and the water terrific if you like swimming (though it is very strange that you can not take a swim outside the designated areas!).

However we found the Yalong Bay at nighttime extremely boring. Where are all the people? One evening we went to the beautiful bar in Crowne Plaza for a drink, we were the only guests the whole time...

You can only eat at the hotel restaurants and they are nice looking but rather expensive (compared to local restaurants in China) and the food is not really good either. So we took a taxi or bus to Dadonghai about 20 minutes from there. That was much better with a real sence of China with good restaurants and inexpensive. Also some rather good shopping. So if you want to stay in Yalong Bay (which seems to be the nicest beacharea), go to Dadonghai in the evening! The taxi one way is 50 yuan, but definitely worth it. We highly recommend the big outside restaurant near the big square and about 100 meters from the sea. Best Chinese food I麓ve had in years, and I麓ve had a few. Go there early, the Chinese tend to it around 6 or 7 pm.

    Have a nice holiday!

    Jennica in Sweden

Anything (shops/restaurants) between the Yalong bay hotels?

Larrisa, are you a Russian? I can speak Russian and I will be able to explain the answer better in Russian. I have some good ideas about it. Have a nice day!

Larissa28: There is NO shops, NO restaurants, NO amusement, NO bars, NOTHING between the hotels at Yalong Bay hotels. In the evenings and nights there are no people there. Its like a dead place.

    Please read reports for your hotel: ';The first day i arrived things was a messed at the receptionist, everything was confirmed in Australia but once i get there it tooks them 2 days to settle it. The room was clean and the enviroment was awesome. But on the 2nd day when i back to the room after taken breakfast, the floor was very dirty and the table was messy, they didn%26#39;t cean it well. As a 5 star hotel this should%26#39;t happened. I had talk to the staff but still when they re-clean the room the problem still there. The floor still with sand the glass been used was not cleaned!!! That%26#39;s really terrible!!! Kind of dissapointed.';
