I plan to fly to Lhasa from Chengdu and then return by train.I was thinking of getting off at Lanzhou and taking another train to Zhongwei. Has anyone done this trip and is Zhongwei worth the extra travel...which is really out of the way. And can I get to Xian from there by train?

Did you see the post from Dec Thomas on the difficulty of an individual getting a Tibet travel permit?
Maybe you can shed some light on getting it.
I am told that the days of travelling in a group to Tibet are now over. Individual visas are easy to get... Simscozy Travel in Chengdu or some hostels in Xian can also help.
