Stopover Shanghai

hi everybody,

we are planing to go to bangkok on 22 December with an8 hour stopover in Shangai. We would like to use this time to visit the city for some hours but we are not sure if and how this is possible.

It would be great if someone could give us some information regarding the entry and visa regulations if we only stay for some hours.

Thanks a lot in advance!

Stopover Shanghai

I think a transit visa is available for most nationalities, for %26lt;48 hours in Shanghai (or maybe %26lt;24 hours, don%26#39;t remember exactly).

Yes, it should be possible to have a glimpse of the city. What time is your flight arriving at Shanghai and when would your flight out be?

Stopover Shanghai

We麓ll arrive on 23 December at 8:10 in Shanghai and leave at 15:05.

How long does it take to go through arrival and visa procedures and get to the city? Will there be enough time?

Is your flight out a domestic or international one? If you%26#39;re arriving at around 8 am, don%26#39;t even dream of getting out of immigration and baggage claim in under 1 hour. :(

We麓ll go to Bangkok, so it麓s an international flight out. I hope they will put our baggage directly through until Bangkok so that we don麓t have to pick up our baggage in Shanghai and check it in again later. How long does it take to get from the airport to the city centre?

Arriving at 0810 and leaving at 1510. Ok, you%26#39;ll get out of immigration and baggage claim (if you can%26#39;t check your bags all the way through to Bangkok) at 0930 at the earliest, if not, it could take till 1000! For the international flight, you%26#39;ll need to check in again (with or without luggage) at around 1330, latest around 1415.

The quickest way to town would be the Maglev and then the subway, since you won%26#39;t burdened with luggage. Including walking time to the Maglev terminal at Pudong airport, and waiting time, that%26#39;s about 20-30 mins to reach Longyang Lu metro stop (line 2), where you then change to the metro. Thus you should reach Longyang Lu metro stop at around 1000-1100.

Hop off at Henan Zhonglu metro stop (line 2), the journey should take about 20 mins including waiting time. Thus you should reach this metro stop (which is in the middle of Nanjing Lu pedestrian street) around 1020-1120.

Walk down Nanjing Lu pedestrian street towards the east, heading towards the Bund. If you don%26#39;t dilly-dally, you should be able to reach the Bund in about 15 mins, and sightseeing around the Bund should be possible in about half an hour, then take the ferry across the Bund to Pudong. This part should be fine in about 1+ hour in total. Timing should now be around 1230-1300.

From where the ferry drops you in Pudong, walk to the Lujiazui metro stop, remember to gaze upon the montrosity of the Oriental Pearl TV Tower on the way, and to gawk at the many skyscrapers around. This should take no more than half an hour. Hop back on the metro at Lujiazui and change at Longyang Lu metro stop (about 15 mins ride) to the Maglev, which%26#39;ll take you back to the airport.

Thanks a lot!!

No problem, glad to help. :) Good luck, I hope my plan works out fine for you! Would be good if you could post back here after your stopover and let us know how things went.

Sure, I麓ll let you know how it worked out!

One last question, are there lockers available in the airport where we could leave our winter jackets for 3 weeks? It will be cold in Shanghai in December, right?

Yes, there%26#39;s left luggage service at Pudong airport. The rates vary according to size of luggage, so I advise you to pack your winter coats into as small a case as possible before leaving them in storage!

We%26#39;ve a same problem.

We%26#39;re coming to Shanghai around 8am and flight to Bangkok will leave 10pm. There should be enough time to make a little shoping trip to Shanghai. What%26#39;s the best way to do that? We%26#39;ve only hand luggages with us, so leave them to airport luggage service. How long (time/from airport to good shopping area? which would be what?) and how much and how easy this trip would be if we take a taxi? Is that train/subway a better option? Or just forget that day trip to Shanghai? When we%26#39;re coming back we%26#39;re staying one night in Shanghai.
