Hongkong for the first time

I will be traveling in Hongkong with my family just for one day. I would like to find out what%26#39;s the best location I could rent a hotel that close to the airport and at the same time not that far from everything.

I want to go to Stanley Market for shopping. Is that a best place to go for shopping since I heard so much about it?

Hongkong for the first time

Hi,

The Airport Express train makes the journey from the airport to Hong Kong in about 20 minutes, so this can make a short stay in Kowloon or Hong Kong island much more practical and more worthwhile than staying at the airport. Once you are in the city the MTR (underground rail system) and buses are pretty good too so if you use those you can get around from point to point quite easily.

Stanley Market is on the opposite side of Hong Kong island from where the main areas are so it%26#39;s not the quickest place to get to. There are some OK bargains there and probably less of a chance of any big tourist ';stings'; than some of the other markets. There are clothes, toys, some artworks / crafts and various other trinkets on sale there.

Other markets you might want to look at are the Cat Street Market and the Western Market in Sheung Wan (near Macau Ferry terminal), or the Ladies market (Tung Choi Street, Mong Kok in Kowloon).

Otherwise you could blow the budget in Pacific Place or have a look round Causeway Bay (HK Island) and Harbour City (Near Star ferry in Kowloon) which are both malls.

Hope this helps, and have a good trip!

Thanks for all the information.

Can you please tell me the familiar hotels or nice hotel where we can stay nearby those places you have mentioned and at the same at least 20 minutes from HK international airport. Appreciate it.

Hi again,

I guess you would be happiest staying close to some of the areas where it%26#39;s easiest to get around from by subway and / or bus. I have attched links for both the subway and bus companies so you can get route maps for each system:

The subway company website is here:

mtr.com.hk/eng/homepage/e_customer_index.php

The bus company website is here:

http://www.citybus.com.hk/eng/main.asp

As regards Hotels I really think that you should use this site for locating and judging accomodation as I wouldn%26#39;t want to recommend something to you that I don%26#39;t know would suit you.

If you want to stay in Kowloon I would look specifically in Tsim Sha Tsui. (Airport Express train stops in Kowloon) There are plenty of hotels in this area alone without having to go further afield in Kowloon

If you want to stay on Hong Kong Island (Airport Express train terminates at Hong Kong Central) it%26#39;s more expensive but there are plenty of hotels in the following districts - these should cover all budgets and tastes:

Sheung Wan

Central

Admiralty

Wan Chai

Causeway Bay

From Tsim Sha Tsui it is easy to get the Star Ferry (that%26#39;s a worthwhile experience in itself) OR the subway to Central on Hong Kong Island. The main bus station is at Exchange Square in Central

Buses to Stanley from Central are fairly frequent and the service numbers are 6, 6A, 6X and 260. All cost around HK$8 .

If you do decide to stay on the island, another tourist attraction are the old trams which are fun and cheap to use (HK$2) but aren%26#39;t fast!

Hope this helps,

B

If u want to be in a place that has everything, I do suggest causeway Bay (for HK Island) or TST (Mongkok area).

Stanley is a bit out of the way esp. if u lack time. The other markets will be better for your tight schedule.

For hotel, I will leave it to others for TST%26#39;s recommendations and as for HK, go for hotels like Express by holiday Inn, L%26#39;hotel, Metropark, Rosedale, Excelsior, etc

The airport is way out of town but the express trains are excellent and will take u into Central in 24 mins. Central is an expensive neighborhood so if u have any points to redeem from any hotel chain, u can try JW marriott or Conrad. Very good central location (the train station is directly beneath this HUGE property called Pacific Place and the hotels are linked to this mall). This station is actually called Admiralty (MTR).

From here u r between wanchai (right next door) and Central. Causeway Bay and Sheung Wan are the other two neighborhoods next to Wanchai and Central. From here u can get to the Peak easily too.

If u stay at Causeway Bay, dont miss a tram ride ! (even if u dont stay at CB !) Have a lovely time in HK.
