Internal Flights vs. Trains in China

Hello fellow travelers!

I am looking at the breakdown for cost and time for about a 15 day trip going from Beijing, Lhasa, Xian, Guilin, Shanghai.

We are planning on packing in a lot of activities during the day; should we plan on taking flights or trains to get from place to place keeping in mind best cost and time, safety etc. Of course if we did trains we%26#39;d do sleepers based upon other forum posts. If you think flights are the way to go, what airlines and what does the cost generally run? Is this a cheap and fast way to get around or are trains really the best option for such a short trip. Also if sleepers are booked, way ahead of time of course, is it really doable to sleep in the train for overnights. We want to make sure we are well rested for all our activities throughout China.

Thanks a ton!

Internal Flights vs. Trains in China

Overnight trains are nice because you save on a hotel and don%26#39;t waste a lot of the day time travelling. Many people can sleep on trains, but others are not so lucky. Trains make sense between Beijing and Xi%26#39;an and Beijing and Shanghai.

Guilin and Lhasa are far away, so the train trips would be very long. In this case, it probably makes more sense to fly. Note that the cost of flights and soft sleepers is often comparable.

There is not a lot of difference between most airlines in China.

I know that there are often discounts on airfare. Are there discounts also for train tickets?

Thanks,

Simple answer: no. At least none that would apply for your situation. No rail passes either.
