My wife and I are visiiting for 3 days in early March - we want to see as much of HK as possible and already have some ideas of what we want to do. Is Macau worth spending a day visiting during one of our days?
3 Day Visit to HK - Macau? It depends on what would you like to see. The outlook of Hong Kong and Macau is similar, although Macau is smaller and less modern than Hong Kong.
You may know that since last two years, Macau opened many new casino. Today, it looks similar to Las Vegas. On the contrast, casino is prohibted in Hong Kong.
Except the casino, the feeling of Macau is more relax and you can really feel the mix of West (Portugese) and East.
People said Hong Kong is the mix of West and East but I feel Macau is more representable. Hong Kong is just internationized.
Anyway, go to Macau is just 1 hour by ferry and it costs HKD 300/p (return). If you find 2 days are enough for you in Hong Kong, you may spend one day in Macau. May be you have good luck in casino!
Have a nice trip!
3 Day Visit to HK - Macau?Thank you for the information. Are prices of goods in macau cheaper than HK?
I think there%26#39;re less shopping areas in Macau than in HK. We usually go to Macau for nice food (pretty cheap also), some sightseeing and the casinos. If you prefer shopping, HK will be a better place to stay in.
Not being into Casinos - is the sightseeing worth the visit?
For the daily life, Macau is cheaper but as a tourist, going to the restaurant and shopping around, they are similar.
Sorry, forgot to tell you. The old town of Macao has been recently chosen as UNESCO world heritage. There are many old Portugese and Chinese buildings with more than 400 years history.

Hi MartinB,
I%26#39;m from London and just came back from a week in Hong Kong, we spent one day in Macau and I regret not spending more time there really. My last holiday was in Portugal and it really reminded of the country!
I felt it was a strike contrast to Hong Kong and that we visited, literally another country!
The buildings/historical sites are lovely and I enjoyed walking up and down the cobbled streets,
Looking at the pretty squares and it reminded me of Italy too in parts.
I think there is too much to do in Hong Kong also for only 3 days, so upto you really whether you want the shopping malls and galmour of HK or the somewhat tranquil streets of Macau or a mix of both.
Sam
Thanks for all the information.
Sam - what did you do in HK - what are the must do and sees?
Hi Martin
Someone has posted a top ten things to do in HK, look at that, but the Ngong Ping 360 cable car ride, Stanley Market (go to Bayside Brasserie, superb food there!), Harbour lightshow and Lantau visit to Buddha statue are must do%26#39;s in my book. Macau - you can get around easily on buses, just ask at the tourist info centre when you arrive, I got hassled by taxi drivers saying they are tour reps here, don%26#39;t trust them and go on your own, is very small place.
Enjoy!
Sam
