Transport in HongKong - MTR & Taxi

Hi all,

Apologies for the crazy question.

We will be having a short trip to HK - 4D/3N (Fri - Mon)

I will be buying the group this MTR card :

Airport Express Tourist Octopus ';3-Day Hong Kong Transport Pass';

Does the 3-days start on the hour you%26#39;ve used it and up to 24 hrs. ? or is it on a per day.

Meaning - if I first use it Fri 3pm, will the 3-day expire 3pm Monday or will it be Sunday 11:59pm.

On the other side, I am looking at the HK map / MTR station. Is it easy to get taxi at each station - for example Prince Edward Station. I don%26#39;t see any taxi stand near so can I just easily get one outside.

And then I read that it would be HKD 5 per luggage - does this mean those that of the size when you have to check-in and not those that can qualify as hand-carry in a plane ?

8 adults (2 taxi per 4 pax). I don%26#39;t think we would have huge bags and they should fit in easily at the back of the taxi.

Thanks a lot

Cheers,

The unlimited MTR travel on ';3-Day Hong Kong Transport Pass'; starts at the use of the first MTR ride (excluding Airport Express) and end after 72 hours. If use Airport Express at Fri 1pm, first use MTR Fri 3pm, the 3-day will expire 3pm Monday.

It is not necessary to get a taxi at taxi stands, you can try hailing one anywhere, if it doesn%26#39;t stop , it is probably because of a clearway restriction at that time, in that case, try going somewhere without a yellow line at the kerbside.

Taxi luggage charge applies if that is placed inside the luggage or its length + width + height exceeding 140 cm.

Yes, 4 adults without huge bags should normally fit in a taxi.

By the way, have you considered the Airport Express group ticket, it is a good bargain, probably better than 3-Day Hong Kong Transport Pass, unless you use MTR very much.

Missed an important word:

Taxi luggage charge applies if that is placed inside the luggage **compartment** or its length + width + height exceeding 140 cm.

Thanks Tin

This is good info.

Actually, if you are going to take Airport Express, you should get a taxi connection at Kowloon Station rather than changing lines to the Prince Edward Station becuase those MTR urban lines may be quite crowded and not very luugage friendly.

If you want to save costs, the cheapest way is to take airbus A21 (HK$33 per person) to Metropark Hotel Mongkok, and get a taxi connection.

Thanks Tin for being taking time to reply and being helpful.

Actually the reason why I want to get the ';Airport Express Tourist Octopus ';3-Day Hong Kong Transport Pass'; '; is because of the unlimited MTR rides.

I initially am thinking of getting the 2 Airport Express Single Journey and then the othe rone, 1 Airport Express Single Journey.

The key is because we would be going around a lot from Fri - Mon, maximing those 3-days.

But now, it seemed that the Airport bus is increasing option, and might be for both to/from Airport.

HKD 50 / 1 day unlimited ride is too much - I don%26#39;t think it is a good idea.

So, can you suggest which option I should take - would getting an Octopus card ?

How much should I get/load on this one for our 4 days usage ?

Any notes/suggestions on this one - obviously for a first-time tourist.

If you will be spending less than HK$130 on MTR for 72 hours, and will take airbus 21, then you should get usual octopus cards at HK$150 each, which includes $100 credit and $50 deposit. I suggest loading a further HK$50 on each card. Further loadings can be made ar MTR stations or convienence stores. Credit can be used on MTR or other tranports including airbus A21. You can check your MTR costs at mtr.com.hk

Thanks again Tin

BTW - Happy CNY to you

I have made some checks and here is what I am thinking.

- I will get a Airport Express Tourist Octopus - 3-Day Hong Kong Transport Pass (1-Airport Express Ride)

Will use it on departure date

- I will add value to this Tourist Octopus card of HKD 40 (or whatever ) for the cost of the airport shuttle bus

Will take airport bus to hotel on arrival

What do you think ?

Your suggestions are most helpful

Loading octopus are in multiples of HK$50. Also, 3-day unlimited travel only applies to MTR, so you need more credits for peak tram, bus and ferry.
