Eaton Hotel/Top Sites & Meeting UK/Western Travellers?

Hi All,

I%26#39;m going to Hong Kong for CNY, arriving in Hong Kong on Feb 16th until 20th then flying onto Taipei to stay with Taiwanese friends before returning for one night to Hong Kong on 24th. I%26#39;m staying at the Eaton Hotel and would be grateful for any tips/advice on what places to see and visit and also where is the best place to meet fellow westerners/UK people as I%26#39;ll be travelling alone for that part of my trip. Would also be interested in doing a spot of moving and grooving (clubbing), so any advice on clubs/bars near to Nathan Rd would be great. I%26#39;d also be interested in anyone%26#39;s opinions about Eaton Hotel. Many thanks. ;-)

Do be aware during CNY, most business/restaurants/shopping will be closed during at least the 1st day of CNY, many will be still closed until the 4th day, most I know are planning to reopen on the 4th day.... Some will stay close for 1 week.

Major chains and big stores/restaurants will remain open throughout the CNY.

My point is, CNY is a quiet time in HK. (most quiet at least in the year). Many locals and expats are out of town too.

Eaton hotel is a popular hotel for businessmen. Small rooms, not next to MTR, at least a 7 minute walk to the nearest MTR. No Airport express shuttle bus. Breakfast is expensive, and the hotel %26#39;s public areas and some of the rooms were renovated 1 year ago.

It%26#39;s now managed by the Langham Group.

No really good bars/clubs suitable for your needs in Kowloon area, you need to get to Lan Wai Fong, Soho, or Wan Chai. (All on HK island side)....

Near Eaton hotel, I would say go to Knutsford Terrace in Tsim Sha Tsui, quite a number of foreigners hang out there to eat, and drink.

I%26#39;d agree with the previous post. The hotel rooms are small, but adequate and furnished with everything you%26#39;d expect, and my room was very quiet on the 16th floor. The hotel buffets aren%26#39;t bad, but they%26#39;re very expensive. When I stayed there in mid-Jan I enjoyed my stay. There were quite a few westerners when I was there (mostly Aussies), but there%26#39;s a Starbucks next door that probably also attracts some westerners. It is a few minutes walk to the MTR, but once you%26#39;re there it%26#39;s easy to get around and a ticket is only $9HK from Kowloon to Central, across the harbor.

I too would agree with the previous posters....i stayed at the eaton in december 06 and enjoyed it even though i didn%26#39;t get a renovated room. there were mostly aussies there and breakfast was excellent and included in our room rate...otherwise it would have been expensive. the coffee shops etc downstairs are good and the pool is nice.

we ate dinner at dan ryans chicago grill and met many other aussies and kiwis there. also shopping at harbour city /ocean terminal shopping centre and ate at california pizza kitchen, full of aussies and kiwis also!

we didn%26#39;t go clubbing so no views on that, sorry!

Went to lantau island to see the big buddha, on the ngong ping cable car which was really cool. Also Victoria Peak is nice and walking around HK Island side. Take a ride on the star ferry for only a couple of dollars...maybe more like a few cents actually. visited stanley markets but didn%26#39;t think they were as good as many years ago. Like th ladies market and mong kok for shopping. Hope this is helpful.

Thanks very much for all the information and advice - it is appreciated. :-)
