Tibet Travel Permit (entering from China)

My friend and I will be flying from Beijing to Lhasa (via Chengdu) in September.

We%26#39;ve already paid for our plane tickets, so we need a guide that would JUST get us a travel permit. Can anyone recommend a good one to contact? What is the simplest way to obtain a Tibet travel permit ahead of time?

Thanks so much!

You might want to check the Chinese Embassy website regarding what is required. Are you sure you don%26#39;t need a visa to China as well as your travel permit? Or you already have it?

Here%26#39;s a service that was recommended and I think their website references permits. If not, you could contact them and see.

Tibet Travel Permit (entering from China)

We know how to obtain our visas to China, but there doesn%26#39;t seem to be any information on how to get a separate Tibet permit on the Chinese Embassy%26#39;s website. It seems you can only obtain these through an agency. The problem is that most agencies seem to include airfare, hotels, etc, and we have already booked these. All we need is the permit, but we don%26#39;t know which agency to go through.

Can anyone recommend one?

Wow, I think you may have a problem. I looked at this website that give info on the Tibet Travel Permits:

www.accesstibettour.com/travel-permit.html

Here%26#39;s an excerpt from the site:

Here is a note from Lonely Planet:

';Lhasa PSB will not issue travel permits to individuals and will direct you to a travel agency. Agencies can arrange a travel permit to almost anywhere but only if you book a Land Cruiser, driver and a guide.';

Good Luck!

That%26#39;s the deal. Travel agencies, especially those catering to overseas tourists, always insist that a permit is required and only available if you puchase a fully escorted tour... conveniently from them.

Typically people go to Chengdu (for acclimatisation as well), buy the bus/air ticket and just go. Maybe the travel agent in Chengdu did the permit thing with the bus/air ticket price. Who knows.

Sim%26#39;s Cozy Guesthouse (http://www.gogosc.com) in Chengdu is reliable and helpful in helping with paperwork and tickets to Tibet sans tours.
