How expensive is Hong Kong to visit?

Hi!

I%26#39;m thinking of visiting Hong Kong for a week in the beginning of May and I just wanted a bit of advanced warning on how expensive it is there.

I%26#39;m well aware that it is the most expensive city in the world, but I was just wondering if anyone could give me a few examples of how much food, drinks, nightlife, sightseeing etc costs? Any suggestions on how much money I should take for a week?

I really want to go, but I want to be fully prepared as I want to do as much as I can in a week. Any advise would be gratefully appreciated.

Kind regards,

Batfink

hong kong is certainly not the most expensive city in the world!!!

You can actually make HK as expensive or as cheap as you wan it to be you can have a nice meal from a hawker for 拢2 or the same type of dish in the shangri la for 拢50.

realistically you will not find HK any more expensive than a bit of time spent in London. Drinks and food from a 7-11 are very cheap if you goto a bar in lan kwai fong a drink will cost you about 拢6

The first time i went to hong kong i was there for 2 weeks and spent 拢500 however i was on a big budget

the 2nd time i visited i took 拢500 just for a week for me this was more than enough i managed to buy a new camera do everything i wanted to do and eat out everynite and still come home with a few pounds in my pocket, so i would say 拢500-600 should be ample if you not wanting to flash the cash and shop till you drop!

Second the above comment.................London and Tokyo are much more expensive.

Transport including taxis are cheap, bars have happy hours, the pound is very strong against the HKD, no VAT on anything........hotels can be a bit expensive at the top end but they are world class for service.

HK has a high standard of living in some surveys but that is due chiefly to property prices. Energy costs are also relatively high. However, as a tourist, your biggest expensive will be your hotel, and you can choose to spend according to your budget there so you can still have a good trip that is not unreasonable.

Everything else such as food, sightseeing tickets, drinks, etc, should look fairly cheap from a British perspective given the strong pound these days. As mentioned above, a taxi at flagfall is HK$15, or less than a pound! Most reasonable rides within the city should not cost more than HK$30-40 unless you are crossing the harbour, going to Repulse Bay, or going or coming from the airport, and there are less expensive options to do those things as well that are not any slower.

Thanks to all of you who have replied to my post - that has certainly cleared a few things up and am definitely going to go now!

Many thanks again!

Hong Kong is an expensive city. But it%26#39;s not the most expensive.

And coming from England, you will be surprised how ';affordable'; most things will be while you are touring here.

The thing to remember while you stay and tour in Hk is.... you can go as cheap as you like for meals, hotels, and shopping. And vice-versa, you can go as EXPENSIVE as you like for hotels, shopping, and meals.

The matter is spending the time and comparing and finding the place/item/meal you want.

People can survive on a meal for just $ 10HKD for lunch, it comes complete with soup, noodle/rice, and a drink (milk tea, coffee, lemon tea).

People can order a ';bbq pork bun'; for $ 200 a basket. It contains abalone, sharkfin, and bbq pork inside.

You can take a mini bus for $ 2.40 a trip, or you can take a taxi, or limousine or private chauffeured car for the day for a price.

you can rent a bed for $ 80 a day, or you can live at the Peninsula or Four Seasons for $ 3000 a night.

Hope this gives you an idea.

How much you want to budget would be how you want to plan your trip.

good luck!

london paris and brugge are more expensive than hong kong

Hong Kong is a very inexpensive destination certainly far cheaper than London, Dublin and most other western European cities.

Alcohol is a bit expensive but not a lot and accommodation in terms of what you pay and what you get for your money is far better value than Europe. Getting about the city is very cheap and hassle free, food is fresh, very tasty and a bargain. A very good value holiday destination!

But I find bar prices are much higher in general in HK than in London or Tokyo.

The point I%26#39;am trying to make is alcohol prices aside (though I still maintain It%26#39;s not that bad) Hong Kong is a very inexpensive destination and I do enjoy a good drink but I%26#39;am not going to travel 6000 miles to sit in a bar. Yes I%26#39;ll have the odd drink but I%26#39;ts not going to have a major impact on my budget.

Concensus is that HKG is comparible to the major cities when it comes to accommodation, electronics and drinks. I agree with this. I also agree that virtually every other aspect is cheaper though including food and transport, which usually can make up a big chunk of your expenses. Be sensible and you%26#39;ll find that you%26#39;ll get a lot more for your money than in London.
