How bad is the first week of October?

Our family was planning a trip to China for our kids(12,15) fall break Sept. 29-Oct.15. We would be traveling with an organized tour group on a 10-12 day tour visiting Beijing, Shanghai, Xian (the very standard intinerary). We would be there during the Golden Week holiday. How bad are the crowds? Should we wait until we can go another time of year? Please help..

The crowds can be pretty bad during the holiday. Being on a group tour presumably means that your travel and lodging are probably be pre-arranged, so that shouldn%26#39;t be a major problem.

Good luck

Regardless of whether you%26#39;re on a tour or not, I would avoid travelling in China during the Golden Week if at all possible. Crowds (and pickpockets) are no fun in China.
