First time to HK and China...

Hi there,

I%26#39;m lookin for advice on the %26#39;Must See%26#39; spots in HK and China that are fairly easy to travel to and also any %26#39;Must Eat%26#39; places. I love Chinese cuisine and I%26#39;m worried I may just eat everything forsaking my stomach lol

I%26#39;m goin with my family (4 adults) and we have no clue where to start! Our trip is going to be between 2-3 weeks starting off in HK...

First time to HK and China...

Look your query is far too general and we could spend an hour of our own precious time just trying to cover all of this. It is best to read some brochures/guides (try Frommers online guide), get some idea of what you are interested in and then ask specific questions.

HK - see Discover Hong KOng website, first.

Three weeks is not long. Ideally you should limit your holiday to no more than 4-5 different kinds of places (historical/nature), otherwise it will become a big blur if you try to pack too much in.

First time to HK and China...

Hi,two or three weeks you can try this line

Beijing (3 days )-Xi鈥檃n ( 2 days )- suzhou,hong zhou, shamghai ( 5 days)

Cheng du (3 days)-guilin(3 days) ,Da li (3 days) and I suppose those places are nice ,you can have a try.

And I also have some general introduction for China, if you like, please give me the email address and I can send you to share.

Best regards

Jeff

Thanks for that Jeff, my email is genguro64@hotmail.com I look forward to hearing from you!

Hi,3days in Beijing is a short time,4days is better.Shanghai,Suzhou,Hangzhou,Nanjing 5days,Chengdu 3days,Yunnan 3days,Guilin and Yangshuo 3days.must eat Peking Duck,Hot-Pot

Thanks for that dude, personally I would love to just go out there for a couple of months and explore the whole place slowly but unfortunately I have neither the time nor money yet so this trip is kinda like a taster.

We%26#39;ve had a change in destinations as well; Shanghai has been swapped for Tokyo and Kyoto, so it%26#39;s shaping up to be...

Hong Kong: 3 days --%26gt; Beijing: 3-4 days --%26gt; Tokyo/Kyoto: 5-6 days

Should be fun! =)

P.S: Is it true that Shanghai has everything Hong Kong has but at 25-50% cheaper? If so does it apply for PC parts as well?

Was there any specific reason for choosing Hk over Shanghai?

After reading your interests on the Japan forum you would probably find Shanghai a bit more quirky than Hk. But if that is a family decision than there is not much you can do about it.

I wouldn%26#39;t waste too much time looking out for electronics on your trip. There are other posts about this topic and they aren%26#39;t terribly glowing.

HK - Causeway Bay for shopping at night. Very vibrant.

A side trip to Macau.

A recent Qantas Staff guest took home Ram components he bought and did alot of damage to his computer, he researched the prices well before he left Australia and most things in China unless you really know what your doing, were not that much cheaper it was not worth taking the risk.

Hong Kong is always the ';safe '; choice, that is why half this forum have questions about one of the easiest places in the world to navigate, shop and eat.

Until you have compared both places and seen how much more Shanghai has to offer, the sceptic, or the will take the easy choice.

Shanghai is the Far East...HK is the Far West, so to speak.

Xian -

No specific reason for choosing it at all. The destinations are my choice, my mum is BA staff and as I%26#39;m about to turn 24 I wont be eligible for concessions anymore. So she%26#39;s letting me decide where we go. From what you%26#39;ve said I%26#39;m quite intrigued with changing HK to Shanghai

BundBnB-

Thanks for the heads up ;) I may just buy the components from Tokyo. I totally understand about it being the safer %26#39;home from home%26#39; destination but I only know what I%26#39;m told and I%26#39;ve never been told much about Shanghai. Both my Chinese friends never stop going on about HK. I am open to changes tho so I%26#39;ll look into researching Shanghai

Look Shanghai is going forward, HK was far better years and years ago. I was so disappointed by the markets in HK. I don%26#39;t know whether it is because Sydney is so multicultural and I am just used to seeing the same stuff here,

My son walked around trying to buy games for his PSP and hardly could find anything in HK, not that it is any better in Shanghai. He bought a memory card in Beijing and it seemed to die three weeks later. Supposedly a genuine Sony but who knows. I wouldn%26#39;t buy anything electronic overseas, it%26#39;s just too risky. Know your prices before you go.

Shanghai has the best buildings/city lights as far as I am concerned. Even if you had to compare it with what Tokyo serves up as a CBD, well no contest. Shanghai is the mover and shaker at this time. I think places like Akihabara and Ginza at night are pale by comparison in terms of neon and just street excitement.

So if you do go to Shanghai you could go to

Puxi side

-the Bund at night

- Acrobatics (awesome) or Shanghai Circus

- Nanjing Rd

-Xintiandi

-Dongtai Rd antique market - Mao memorabilia

- Madame Tussauds

-Yuyuan Gardens - well its touristy

- French Concession - go to Fuxing Park to see the oldies doing Tai Chi, dancing, sword fighting, singing, carrying around their birds, wearing their pyjamas etc, walk around trendy Huahai Rd and cross streets

Pudong side

- The Pudong Tourist Tunnel (a psychedelic experience, some people think it is disgusting but we loved it )

- The Oriental Pearl Tower

- Shanghai History Museum - an excellent museum in the basement of the Oriental Pearl

-Superbrand mall for shopping/dining

- the Maglev train

Then you can take a side trip to a water town. Xitang was the town shown in the recent MI3 movie. Another good one is Wuzhen.

If your budget is no limit - dine out at one of the many places in Xintiandi at night and another place is one of the restaurants with a view from the Superbrand mall of the Bund. We ate at the South Beauty restaurant (moderate prices in trendy atmosphere) .Great food and views of the Bund.

Thanks again Xian, we have decided to change HK for Shanghai.

So now its...

Beijing%26gt;%26gt;%26gt;Shanghai%26gt;%26gt;%26gt;Kyoto/Nara%26gt;%26gt;%26gt;Tokyo

Can anybody recommend any pesonal guides and hotels for Beijing and Shanghai?

Cheers
