Planning a trip to China in March. We are flying into Beijing. But trying to decide on side trips. would like to go to a smaller town 鈥?Looked into Lijiang but the price of airline tickets are more then what we were wanting to spend (USD $600.00). Is it cheaper to wait and purchase tickets when we get to China or find something before we go? Is there another little town that feels like Lijiang but closier to Beijing? Also thought about going to Datong 鈥?should we travel by train or bus?
Any other places we should consider visiting?
thanks, tracy

When you say that you are interested in a side trip how many days do you have? I found this tour of Lijiang which is 4 days from Beijing, including hotel, airfares, some meals and transfers.. Is something like this what you are after?I don%26#39;t think there is a direct flight from Beijing, only Shanghai? Maybe someone else can comment on this.
I have heard that Lijinag Jian Nan Chun Hotel is a better hotel - an example of Naxi-style architecture and situated in the old town. So you could ask someone to customise your hotel to suit your needs.

Yes, Lijiang IS a long way from Beijing.
If you%26#39;re flying there, you might want to look into flying Beijing -- Kunming and then Kunming -- Lijiang, that might shave some off the price. When would your dates of travel be?
Pingyao in Shanxi province would be the closest, I think. However Pingyao doesn%26#39;t have a minority population like Lijiang does, Lijiang is home to the (mainly) Naxi minority, Pingyao is Han Chinese.
I would recommend travelling by train to Datong.
For other places to visit, what are your sightseeing interests and preferences? How long do you have in China? What%26#39;s your budget like? How many of you are there? I presume it%26#39;s your 1st trip to China and that you have no knowledge of Chinese.
Hi im also going for 2 weeks in march, wanted to stay in shanghai 4 days, then chongquin 2 days, then xian 2 days, datong:yungang and longman caves 1 day? and then to beijing for 4 days?
i heard that the yangtze is not as interesting anymore....
anyone has ideas about getting air and train tickets? hotel suggestions
Have answered you on your own thread. Would add that the 3 Gorges cruise IMHO is a royal waste of time and money.
Do you recommend buying airline tickets before we fly to China or wait until we get there and purchase them from a travel agency 鈥?wanting the best deal.
We only have 2 weeks in China. We will be in Beijing for 3-4 days then we wanted to travel to a smaller town. Wanting to experience culture and somethign else besides the big city. Do you think Lijiang is worth our time %26amp; money?
There are only 2 of us traveling 鈥?1st trip tto China.
I would offer to help you with your plane tickets if you like, but I%26#39;m not sure if you would like to trust me. If you%26#39;d like to try anyway, you could email me at ellyse99@yahoo.com -- please put ';TripAdvisor atlanta07'; in the subject line so that I don%26#39;t junk your email by mistake, thanks. I%26#39;m studying here and not in the business of ripping off travellers for extra pocket money.
Actually, where else are you going in China? That might be helpful to me to recommend other smaller towns in China for you to consider, if Lijiang is too far. Lijiang is quaint and picturesque if that%26#39;s what you%26#39;re after, but I%26#39;ve also had wonderful experiences of other places that%26#39;ve pleasantly surprised me in the past, but those are usually not so well-known to Western travellers, for lack of advertisement.
