where to stay - kowloon or hong kong island

I stayed on Kowloon side in Dec this year and there are some good reasons to do so.

Star ferry is cheap, quick and reliable so no problems getting to the island.

The hotels seemed in general to be a bit cheaper in Kowloon and still get good location.

MTR is easy and fairly cheap for getting around.

Lots of sights on the island but it seemed to me there were more of the must sees on the mainland side so it made a bit more sense for travelling to see places to be on that side.

Views of the island after dark are incredible.

Stay on the island, I%26#39;ve stayed on both sidesof the harbour and all the places of interest are on the island. Kowloon is o.k. for shopping but is a bit hectic. Hong kong island is a bit more relaxed and anyway if you want to shop just hop on the ferry or MTR over to Kowloon, fantastic transport system.

it doesnt matter too much where u stay (which side) coz the public transportation is very efficient. Personally, I do prefer HK island as I find Kowloon too busy and over-crowded but on an overall basis for a tourist, it is a good shopping area and lodgings are cheaper.

Good Luck

PS. if u decide to stay on HK Island, causeway bay is a great location for shopping, dining and transport.

To suggest that ';all the places of interest are on the island'; is just plain wrong. Wherever you stay in HK you can get anywhere else easily and quickly, but it would be bizarre to limit yourself to HK Island. There%26#39;s no area - hotels, restaurants, bars, shopping, culture, scenery - in which Kowloon is lacking. If you visit HK then take in the whole experience - HK Island, Kowloon, New Territories, Outlying Islands...

Unless you have any spot in particular that u wanna visit, it%26#39;s pretty much the same to stay on either side of Hong Kong.

HK side-- Causeway Bay

Kowloon side -- Mong Kok

these 2 places are the centre of shopping and different cuisines. Both of them are VERY crowded, but you can find almost anything you want to see (except scenary....there%26#39;re just buildings and buildings and building...:P).

Just make good use of the MTR and u%26#39;ll be able to go to both sides very easily.

Hi

You nealry have my Mom%26#39;s name!

I stayed on Hong Kong Island and stayed for a week and I met tourists from Kowloon and HK Island and you still have to get tubes/trams everywhere so made not much difference. I did prefer HK Island personally as its less crowded and hectic than Kowloon.

If you need any more info just holler, having arrived yesterday morning am delighted to talk about it!!
