Hong Kong or Kowloon

Is it best to stay in Hong Kong Island or Kowloon. Where are there nice restaurants and bars located?

Hong Kong or Kowloon

We stayed on the HK side and thought it was great for bars and restaurants. We were at the IFC mall so went to a few places within the mall....two we really liked were Crystal Jade and Liam (a new Vietnamese restaurant) . On the HK side you also have Lang Kwai Fong...where most of the good bars are. We really enjoyed being on this side...though I am not sure about the Kowoloon side. The Kowoloon side looked more touristy, however I am sure there are good places there too.

Hong Kong or Kowloon

I too personally find HK island a smaller and more managable town than Kowloon and the more popular bars and restaurants are all around Wanchai, Causeway Bay, Central and Admiralty.

Good Luck

Hi sassy sue,

I%26#39;ve stayed on both sides of the harbour and the Island is by far the best place to stay, Kowloon is a bit to hectic and I found a better choice of eating options on the Island.

Thanks for your help. Just need to book a hotel now.

if u r planning to dining at the famous Lan Kwai Fong and the restaurants near the Escalators, there are many hotels around Central or Admiralty (i do love the hotels at Pacific Place - Conrad, JW Marriott and Island Shang for being close to central as well as right next to Wanchai and only a little further is Causeway Bay).

If not, u can easily stay at Causeway Bay or Wanchai eg. Grand Hyatt, Metropark, JAI, Lanson, etc

good luck

I%26#39;m going to go against the grain and make the case for Kowloon which has no trouble matching the best (hotels, bars, restaurants) offered by HK Island. Yes, it can be bustly, but isn%26#39;t that why you visit a city? Central (with the exception of the deeply tacky Lan Kwai Fong) and Admiralty are pretty dead at night unlike TST and Mongkok which are as busy at midnight as they are at midday.

Having said that, transport in HK is so good and so cheap, that it doesn%26#39;t much matter where you stay.

have to agree with Andewlm.

The island for sure,

After spending time shopping etc at Kowloon side no matter how far up you go (the further up or inland the less touristy %26amp; more local atmosphery it gets) %26amp; quite often better the bargains,

It just seems to have a more soothing homely effect when back on the island, not sure why,

The almost always forgotten ';Bishop Lie'; hotel on Robinson Rd, yes the rooms are a large shoebox but very nice with great staff,(say ';Lobinson Load'; to the cab driver %26amp; he will take you straight there, no offence) is just at the top of the esculator, with tons of fab restuarants %26amp; bars, of all budgets, good luck.

Good mix of opinions here. Its Kowloon side for me though, I love the atmosphere of Yau Ma Tei and Mongkok which are a bit further north along Nathan Road and retain a more localised experience.

The markets and round the clock shopping make you realise that not all of Hong Kong is touristy and pricey.

Its your choice at the end of the day, the areas I mention are a bit less sanitised and a bit more genuine than some of the almost artificial tourist areas, and definitely cheaper.

Wherever you stay you should have a great time
